Valenti and Studios Stick With Ban, Tapes for Academy Members Only

According to the article:

"Michelle Byrd and Dawn Hudson, heads of the Independent Feature Project chapters in New York and Los Angeles respectively, met with Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) chief Jack Valenti who then took their concerns to the Hollywood studio heads. Reps from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (presenters of the Golden Globes), the Screen Actors Guild, and critics groups also met with the MPAA head to advocate a lifting of the ban, to allow screeners for all. As promised, Valenti got back to the groups last week, but not with the answer they had hoped for."

"This was a law meant to protect digital music and digital movies," said Joe Kraus, co-founder of DigitalConsumer.org. Chamberlain's claim is "well beyond what Congress intended" when it created the law.
Kraus said that the law can allow established companies in a marketplace to prevent innovators from encroaching on what these established companies believe to be their turf."

"Not everyone thought it was time to sue. Valenti launched into one of his signature orations, lobbying the moguls to continue exploring more advanced technological copy protection. When Valenti concluded, according to several people in the room, Chernin bluntly told the MPAA chief, "Jack, I totally disagree with you." Chernin urged the studio chiefs to follow the lead of the music companies and move ahead with lawsuits.
When the Fox chief called for a raised-hand vote, it was unanimous. While no one will confirm a specific timetable, the studios have instructed Valenti to begin preparations for lawsuits aimed at avid file sharers, be they junior-high-schoolers, computer-savvy techno geeks or grandmothers."
