Homeless Veteran Sues Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) a.k.a. Hollywood Studios

According to the article:

"Michael Rossi, President of InternetMovies.com Inc., an online magazine promoting movies, filed a complaint against the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) in April 2002, for the wrongful shut down of his web site for alleged piracy and copyright violation. The United States District Court of Hawaii ruled in favor of the MPAA, in May 2003. Rossi has filed a Notice of Appeal, http://www.InternetMovies.com/legal.html , in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth District."

"A coalition of independent filmmakers has sued Hollywood's major movie studios seeking to overturn a controversial ban on sending out videos of films vying for prizes, saying that the move unfairly restricts their business, officials say."

Australian ISP sued over file sharing

According to the article:

"The Digital Millennium Copyright Act may be one of the worst things to emerge from the United States Congress since it was first called to order in 1789. However, those who crafted the law at least had the good sense to ensure that ISPs would not be held liable for the contents of traffic on their networks. Apparently, Australia offers no such protection, as Com-Cen, a small Aussie ISP is being sued by six record companies. The suit alleges that Com-Cen was participated in the illegal sharing of copyrighted works by allowing them on their network, and seeks AUS$300 million in damages. Michael Speck, general manager of of Music Industry Piracy Investigations laid the blame for the amount of file-sharing traffic squarely at the feet of the ISP:"

Kucinich Requests Hearing On Diebold DMCA Abuses

According to the article:

"“Diebold’s actions abuse the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, using copyright to suppress speech rather than fulfill the Constitution’s purpose for copyright, to “promote progress.” These abuses raise a fundamental conflict with the First Amendment, diminishing the Internet’s tremendous value as a most free medium of expression. Diebold’s actions are representative of a growing body of abuses through which large and powerful parties unfairly intimidate ISPs to remove information those parties do not like. In other examples, the claims are not really about copyright, but about not showing the parties in a negative light, or not allowing consumers to compare prices, or quieting religious critics. Powerful parties should not be permitted to misuse copyright as a tool for limiting bad press and barring access to legitimate consumer information.”"

SBC challenges RIAA over DMCA-subpoenas

According to the article:

"Internet service provider SBC Communications and RIAA have attended a hearing to debate the legitimacy of subpoenas handed out by RIAA. RIAA asked the court to dismiss SBC's case entirely, while SBC requested a summary judgement, which would give them a victory in the case without going to a full trial."
